Corporate Social Responsibility in Cyprus

Melco Cyprus strives to be a key contributor and partner to the community. Our efforts in Cyprus include:

Lamatiki Wildfire Response:

Acting promptly in response to the wildfires that struck rural areas of Larnaca and Limassol in July 2021, Melco Cyprus and its partner, CNS Group, contributed a total of €100,000 for the restoration of ‘Iamatiki’ District School in Eptagonia - the central school of the area. The restoration and upgrade of the Iamatiki District School’s facilities ensures that students from at least ten communities in the area, which the school serves, will have access to uninterrupted quality education and benefit from improved learning experiences. Additionally, Melco Cyprus and CNS Group also supplied five low-weight fire emergency response vehicles for the local community, thereby helping them to become more resilient to fire threats.

Education

Melco Cyprus partners with top-rated local universities to offer colleagues practical learning opportunities through scholarships. The Company has signed three-year agreements with various Cyprus universities to provide full and partial scholarships to Melco employees in up to 35 fields of study, including PhD programmes, business administration, international tourism, hospitality and event management, accounting, finance, business intelligence and data analytics, human resources and security management

Environment

Melco has ambitious sustainable development goals that include eliminating the impact of Melco’s resorts on the climate by 2030 and taking a lead on circular economy.

City of Dreams Mediterranean, has been honoured with a BREEAM Excellent rating for its sustainability strategy, becoming the first development in the country to achieve this rating, BREEAM is the world’s leading sustainability assessment method for master planning projects, infrastructure and buildings. City of Dreams Mediterranean is built in accordance with the highest sustainability standards – from its material usage and state of the art water reuse system to the energy-saving optimisation of the building’s orientation and shading. To incorporate the IR into its surrounding landscape, it will encompass over 130,000 newly planted trees and indigenous plants, creating a holiday oasis for guests and reducing carbon emissions. City of Dreams Mediterranean will also strive to eliminate food waste and single-use plastics in its daily operations, and recycle general waste through onsite compactors.

To help the environment and enhance the quality of life for the local community, Melco Cyprus organises beach and underwater clean-up initiatives in cooperation with local authorities and non-governmental organisations.

Culture & Heritage – “Preserving the Legacy, Creating the Future”

Melco endeavors to foster pride and identity for local traditions and heritage through conservation and cultural appreciation programs. A current project in Cyprus is in collaboration with the Department of Antiquities in Archaeological Heritage Management. With the aim to promote the authenticity of the island’s most significant heritage sites, Melco sponsored the installation of new gates at the Acropolis of Ancient Kourion and the Sanctuary of Apollo Hylates as part of the ‘Heritage Gates’ project. Through this unique initiative, the Company sponsored heritage enhancements to significantly improve the tourist experience, demonstrating its long-term and continuous commitment to support government efforts to sustainably preserve and promote local culture.
